Remus John Lupin, more commonly known as Professor Lupin, is a pivotal character in the Harry Potter series, first appearing in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Lupin is a kind and intelligent wizard who suffers from lycanthropy, meaning he is a werewolf. He contracted this condition as a young child after being bitten by Fenrir Greyback.

He taught Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during Harry Potter's third year. Lupin was a close friend of Harry's father, James Potter, as well as Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, during their time at Hogwarts. Their group was known as the Marauders.

His expertise in defensive magic and his compassionate nature made him a beloved, if short-lived, professor. His lycanthropy eventually forced him to resign from his position at Hogwarts.
